How the Calculator Works
Estimates are based on our dataset of real startup costs for 5 business types across all 50 states and DC. The calculator applies a state cost index to the national average to reflect local permit costs, insurance rates, and commercial rent. Working capital (3 months of estimated fixed costs) is included in all estimates — most startup cost calculators omit this, which is why most new business owners run out of cash.
The three scale tiers correspond to:
- Budget / basic setup: Used or entry-level equipment, minimal buildout, lean operating capital. The minimum viable launch.
- Standard setup: New equipment, standard buildout quality, 3 months working capital. The most common real-world scenario.
- Premium / full build: High-end equipment, complete buildout with design investment, 6 months working capital. What well-funded launches typically spend.
What's Not in This Estimate
The calculator covers the main cost categories. It does not include:
- Liquor license costs (add $1,500–$15,000 for restaurants/bars planning to serve alcohol)
- Franchise fees, if applicable (add $10,000–$50,000 for a franchise model)
- Real estate purchase costs (only commercial lease costs are estimated)
- Vehicle purchases (relevant for landscaping, catering, delivery businesses)
- Ongoing operating costs beyond the working capital buffer
